Oxford University Press – South Africa’s Leader in Literacy and Languages – is on the lookout for talented illustrators to bring their unique style to our educational content.

We have exciting prizes up for grabs and the opportunity to be added to the Oxford Universitv Press freelance illustrator talent pool, for future opportunities to work with us.

The 1st prize is a MacBook Air and 2nd Prize, a Wacomb Tablet.

We are looking for digital artwork that is not only visually appealing, but also relatable to the South African school going learner.

Your work will help bring our educational content to life and engage learners in a meaningful way.

Brief 1:

The setting is in a natural park with a large pond. There are some lily pads on top of the water of the pond. There are large trees in the park. It is autumn so the leaves have turned orange.

Four characters are in this scene: Samuel, Ouma Bibi, Boetie and Trompies the Parrot. You’ll need to show off your best skills and ability to create realistic people.

 

Brief 2:

The scene is set in the African bushveld. We can see trees and a dry landscape in the background. There is a large watering hole where the animals are drinking.

All of the characters in the scene are wild African animals, 7 in total. We can see the veld in the background with some thorn trees. The sky is a bright blue. There is a dirt path winding into the distance from the watering hole.

Brief 3:

Wow us with your outstanding talent and creativity by designing your very own 3 frame super-hero style comic strip!

This setting is full of action: two superheroes coming to the rescue of a bus full of citizens who need your help.

There are a few important things to know:

1. Artwork files must be 210 x 297 mm (A4), Portrait orientation, 300DPI Tiff File.

2. Illustrators are required to create their illustrations in layers. This means that each element in the illustration is created and available on a separate layer within the open files – Illustrator or Photoshop. This must include any textures, patterns or elements pertaining to a single element that is specified.

Create your own interpretation of the brief and amaze us with your best art work
